Bright, beautiful dresses borne of Lauren Bagliore’s grief

Personal tragedy nearly felled designer Lauren Bagliore, such that she wasn’t sure she could even create a collection this season.
Instead, she decided to turn pain into something more positive, and the result is what she calls The Resurrection: From the Dark to the Light. As the name suggests, she used a palette of black, white and grey, and did her best to make something beautiful out of grief.
Bagliore, a native New Yorker now living in Calgary, studied at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York before going on to work with the iconic Vivienne Westwood where she honed draping and advanced cutting techniques that have become her own signature.
Survival, then, came in the form of Sophia Loren-esque models wearing variations of her ruched and swagged jersey dresses, and the slouchy harem pants that have become something close to ubiquitous this fashion week.
Bagliore played with the dark and light idea with a few dresses swathed in netting: black over a white tank, and then white wrapped over black; in some cases the light and dark was in the form of stripes, and the “rising from the ashes” notion appeared in the form of a gorgeous white dress that looked shredded and torn, with a grey print underskirt ripped out from underneath.
It might have begun in sadness, but the result is a curve-loving collection that should make Bagliore’s customers most happy indeed.

After a difficult year, Lauren Bagliore made it to Toronto to debut her signature collection at LG's Toronto Fashion Week. The inspiration for Lauren's 2011 spring/summer collection was personal tragedy and the designer paid homage to new beginnings with a refined collection entitled: "La Risurrezione: Dalla Scura Alla Luce" which is Italian for "The Resurrection: From the Dark to the Light."
Bolero jackets, cropped jackets, draped tops and dresses, asymmetrical skirts and Japanese-style trousers all came down the runway. An impressive multi-purpose black dress in matte jersey made several appearances... each time worn a different way. The final dress - a seductive multi-layer white dress was my personal favourite.
The colour palette was a story in itself. The tailored pieces came in black and silver but by the end of the collection the frocks appeared in a tasteful blush pink, ivory and white.

Lauren Bagliore delivers mix of versatile, refined luxe looks for spring/summer
TORONTO - Lauren Bagliore served up a breezy mix of refined, luxe looks in her spring/summer collection Thursday at Toronto's LG Fashion Week.
The native New Yorker, who divides her time between the Big Apple and Calgary, where she lives with her Alberta-born husband, dubbed her latest line "La Risurrezione: Dalla Scura alla Luce," an Italian translation meaning "The Resurrection: From the Dark to the Light."
Largely steeped in a colour palette of black, grey and ivory with punctuations of paler blush-coloured hues, the designs were a decided study in contrasts between edgy, tailored looks to more ethereal, free-form creations.
Bagliore offered bolero jackets with a twist, mixing striped and monochromatic patterns.
She showed her versatility with sleek, draped tops and dresses in matte or viscose jersey, some sporting convertible straps or hoods to transform the look, shape or silhouette of the piece.
Bagliore showcased slightly more seductive numbers, including clingy, knotted-back or halter dresses and more delicate fluttering textured silk creations.
Baggy Japanese-style trousers, cigarette-slim shirred leggings and lush metallic skirts were also in the mix.

FIT graduate Lauren Bagliore has come into her own dark oasis this Toronto Fashion Week. The native New Yorker, Calgary transplant perfected her craft in the fashion houses of Vivienne Westwood, Zac Posen, Libertine, and Paul Hardy. This season Lauren worked on a collection so emotional and raw she called it The Resurrection: From the Dark to Light/La Risurrezione: Dalla Scura alla Luce.
Inspired by rival to Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Lauren Bagliore created a collection rooted deep in the history of fashion for the label’s Spring Summer 2011 collection. The strong monochromatic palette presented the elements of yin and yang, creating a strong collection of pieces that incorporate frills, and delicate draping with strong angles. Strong shoulder pads on jackets mixed in with hooded turned cowl neck blouses and convertible pieces highlighted the collection’s underlying transformation theme.
The Lauren Bagliore Spring Summer 2011 collection is wholly comprised of black and white pieces with touches of gray, her use of such stark shades combined with unconventional cuts and fabrics transformed the concept of a romantic Elizabethan like collar into an edgy bold pieces.
Lauren attributes the darkness and extreme contrast in shade and shadow to her experiences of discovering beauty out of the ashes of personal tragedy. The powerful, intentional use of two tones gives the collection a purposeful, almost tormenting beauty that speaks to human emotion and the artist that Lauren is as a designer.
