The new politics of shopping is such that we may never again feel completely comfortable eating bananas or asparagus in January again.

But a healthy dose of CanCon in the closet need not come between a girl and glamour.

Happily for fashion lovers, there is a new crop of designers showing at Toronto fashion week Oct. 18 to 23, joining stalwarts such as Comrags, Ewanika and Lowon Pope, and mavericks like Jeremy Laing and Complex Geometries.

They’re poised to take their place in the hearts of fashionistas, mavens, and women who need to get dressed in something nice.

The gambit worked. Lauren Bagliore, 28, graduate of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, sent examples of her work to Vivienne Westwood in 2005. Bagliore’s ballsy bravado led to a job with the British grande dame of outrageous fashion, and then jobs with designers Zac Posen and Libertine. But being an underling didn’t entirely suit and Bagliore, based in New York and Calgary, began a design house, with her first collection of uber- feminine, drapey dresses and dramatic coats for fall 2010. Her spring collection will extend the draping theme in silks, plus shiny, nearly metallic Japanese nylon.

“The quality and construction are equally as important to me as design — the inside of every garment looks as beautiful as the outside,” says Bagliore.
